Music
Music at Walford is a vibrant and integral part of the School's co-curricular offering, fostering creativity, confidence, and community among students.
Research underscores the benefits of music education, highlighting improvements in cognitive abilities, memory, and social skills. At Walford, music education is about building a lifelong appreciation for the arts, developing discipline, being part of something larger than yourself, and nurturing the talents that empower young women to express themselves confidently and creatively.
What music opportunities are offered to Walford students?
From the early years, students engage in immersive programs like the Year 2 String and Year 5 Band Immersion programs, where they receive dedicated instruction and ensemble experience. These foundational experiences are complemented by a rich calendar of events, including several annual concerts, a biennial Junior School musical, a biennial Secondary School musical in collaboration with St Peter’s College, and the dynamic Cabaret show. Students benefit from onsite music tuition and a rich music curriculum from ELC to Year 12.
Walford’s commitment to musical excellence is further exemplified by its participation in festivals such as Generations in Jazz and the South Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival (SASBOF), providing students with opportunities to perform and compete at high levels. Enhancing this vibrant program is the annual residency of accomplished musician Ross Irwin, known for his work with The Cat Empire, who mentors students and enriches their musical journey.
