We understand that choosing boarding is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, which is why communication, wellbeing and personalised care remain central to the School’s approach.

The importance of boarders' wellbeing

Every boarder is at the centre of all we think, say and do. They are known, recognised and celebrated for who they truly are. Guided by a team of caring staff, they are supported to grow in self-awareness, develop confidence and pursue leadership opportunities.

In addition to the Boarding House staff, each girl’s Mentor Teacher will be her key pastoral carer. They work with students to support their wellbeing and development and help tailor a unique pathway that will lead them to achieving their academic results. From developing organisation skills, navigating challenges, setting goals, actioning strategies, and building the credentials needed to create a unique profile, both inside and outside the School, mentors will work to help each girl achieve her best, her way.

Helping boarders thrive academically

Living on campus ensures boarders are never short of opportunities to excel. For study and homework, younger students receive supervised sessions while older ones learn the value of independent study. There are also opportunities for specialised subject sessions, run by Secondary School teachers. Our dedicated boarding staff connect with teachers to promptly address any academic concerns, ensuring every girl receives the support she needs to thrive.

Maintaining open lines of communication

We understand that parents play an integral role in their daughter's educational journey and recognise that the partnership between school and home is essential for each student's success and wellbeing.

We actively engage with parents to ensure they are informed and involved in their daughter's experiences at Walford. Through regular communication channels such as phone calls, emails, social media updates, and online meetings, we provide parents with insights into their daughter's academic progress, co-curricular activities, and overall wellbeing.

Personalised Care

The Boarding staff form close bonds with the young women in their care. Staff see them from the moment they wake up in the morning to lights out at bedtime and everything in between. Our staff provide support with every facet of their lives and work closely with school leadership, teachers, nurses and counsellors to ensure that academic and wellbeing information is communicated seamlessly.

This wraparound approach helps girls feel safe, settled and supported throughout every stage of their boarding journey.

For boarding families, there is also reassurance in knowing that girls can access exceptional opportunities while still remaining connected to home.

Walford Boarding’s activity program also ensures there is something for everyone. Boarders’ input is embraced when developing their action-packed weekend schedule. This year alone has seen the boarders enjoy laser tag, bowling, TreeClimb, ice skating, night markets, and even puppy yoga. They make the most of all Adelaide has to offer, seeing Fringe shows, cheering on the Thunderbirds, or heading to Adelaide Oval for an AFL match. They also hold the ultimate sleepovers, complete with karaoke, face masks and movies.

Transitioning to Boarding at Walford

The transition to boarding is particularly important for regional and remote families.

For many boarders, this starts before they even officially move in, with new girls visiting the house for a sleepover.

Paired with a current boarder, their buddy gives them the grand tour, introduces them to everyone, spends time getting to know them, and takes them on little outings to explore our local area.

This means that when they start, they are already part of the family, and their transition is smooth and familiar.
