Learning and Teaching at Walford
A Walford education develops intellect and character, shaping knowledgeable, ethical and compassionate young women ready to contribute with purpose in a changing world.
Personal, purposeful and future-focused
At Walford, learning is personal, rigorous and purposeful. From the early years to Year 12, we create the conditions for each student to be known well, taught expertly and challenged to achieve her best, her way.
As a school designed intentionally for girls, Walford supports students to think deeply, speak with confidence and pursue academic ambition across academic, creative, sporting and leadership domains. A Walford education develops intellect and character, shaping knowledgeable, ethical and compassionate young women ready to contribute with purpose in a changing world.
A connected E-12 learning journey
Walford offers a connected learning journey from the Early Learning Centre to Year 12, with each stage designed to meet students where they are developmentally while preparing them for what comes next. Across the School, learning is underpinned by high expectations, strong relationships and a clear sense of purpose.
Across Walford, students move from play-based early learning, to the IB Primary Years Program in the Junior School, to the Australian Curriculum in the Middle School, and to SACE in the senior years, with flexible pathways that include VET, acceleration and university studies. Across the School, students access structured opportunities for support, enrichment and extension.
Early Learning Centre
In the Early Learning Centre (3- and 4- year-olds), children learn in a warm, play-based environment shaped by inquiry, intentional teaching and strong partnerships with families. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, the ELC recognises children as curious, capable learners and values the role of relationships, environment and purposeful play in supporting growth, confidence and belonging.
Junior School
In the Junior School (Years R-6), girls build strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and conceptual understanding. Learning is shaped by a deliberate balance of explicit instruction, inquiry and wellbeing, with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme supporting curiosity, global mindedness and deep thinking. Specialist learning opportunities enrich the curriculum and help girls grow in confidence, knowledge and skill.
Middle School
In the Middle School (Years 7-9), students experience the breadth and challenge of the Australian Curriculum while continuing to strengthen foundations in core disciplines and engage with languages, the arts, technologies, humanities, and health and physical education. Interdisciplinary learning and electives build enterprise, critical thinking and future-focused capabilities, while girls are increasingly supported to develop independence and take ownership of their learning.
Senior School
In the Senior School (Years 10-12), students shape personalised pathways aligned to their strengths, interests and aspirations. Walford offers a broad senior curriculum through the SACE, alongside opportunities for VET, acceleration in selected subjects, and university studies. With expert guidance and close support, students are able to make informed choices and pursue ambitious pathways with confidence.
Teaching excellence
Teaching at Walford is evidence-informed, relational and intentional. Our teachers build secure foundations in knowledge and skill, extend students through structured challenge, and use assessment and feedback carefully to guide progress. This supports girls to achieve strong academic outcomes and grow in confidence as learners.
Walford teachers know their students well. They combine subject expertise with a deep understanding of how girls learn, tailoring teaching to the needs of the learners in front of them. Through extension, acceleration, tailored support and a broad range of opportunities in and beyond the classroom, each student is stretched, supported and encouraged to pursue her strengths.
Our shared, research-informed and data-rich approach to teaching helps ensure consistency and excellence across the School, while still allowing teachers to respond thoughtfully to each subject, stage of learning and individual student.
Technology used with balance and intention
Technology at Walford is used deliberately to deepen learning while protecting human connection. In the Junior School, digital tools are introduced carefully and purposefully. In the Secondary School, devices are used in ways appropriate to age, stage, subject and task, while smart phones remain in lockers during the school day to support attention, relationships and wellbeing. Digital citizenship, safety, academic integrity and the thoughtful use of emerging technologies such as AI are part of the learning journey.
In partnership with families
We know that the best learning happens when school and home work together. Walford values strong, respectful partnerships with families, with communication, care and shared understanding at the centre. This helps each student feel known, supported and challenged throughout her learning journey.
